STATEMENT BY POWER 4 PUERTO RICO
THE SAFETY OF PUERTO RICAN WOMEN CANNOT BE AT THE MERCY
OF A WALL-STREET-DRIVEN FISCAL CONTROL BOARD, AKA LA JUNTA
“The Power 4 Puerto Rico Coalition is outraged by the crisis of femicides in the Island and the danger in which our sisters and trans family members remain. We stand with the masses of Puerto Rican people who are demanding #NiUnaMenos (#NotOneLess) and action that includes a gender-based curriculum to help dismantle systemic sexism and misogyny, appropriate training of law enforcement and other government agencies, and accountability for failures of the judicial system.
”What is also an outrage is that the Financial Oversight and Management Board (FOMB) only days before the bodies of Keishla Rodríguez Ortiz and Andrea Ruiz Costas were found determined that a mere $200,000 —instead of the $7 million originally requested— would suffice for an officially declared state of emergency on gender violence —an act that resulted from years of public pressure. With criticism of the board mounting, the FOMB scrambled earlier this week to claim that it had set aside millions for Puerto Rico’s Justice Department. But this allocation was not specifically for the state of emergency.
“While the Junta yesterday afternoon buckled under pressure and has now authorized the $7 million, it took two more killings for the board to discover its error. The FOMB had no problem shortchanging the safety of Puerto Rican women as it agreed to pay some hedge funds close to 80 cents on the dollar of a still unaudited debt. Puerto Ricans vulnerable to violence should not be at the mercy of a board that puts Wall Street profits over a life or death crisis.
“Additionally, while we applaud Governor Pierluisi for declaring this overdue state of emergency and having requested significant resources, the same level of boldness and urgency he displayed when standing up to the board to insist on funding a questionable shadow congressional election was missing around this crisis.
“Puerto Ricans on the ground are confronting leaders and institutions and pressing for change. Misplaced priorities and a broken board that serves Wall Street are not going to drive that. It’s time to halt this damage. We urge President Biden and Congress to undo an unelected board that is risking the lives of Puerto Ricans and the future of the Island.”

LA SEGURIDAD DE LAS MUJERES PUERTORRIQUEÑAS NO PUEDE ESTAR A LA MERCED DE UNA JUNTA DE CONTROL FISCAL IMPULSADA POR WALL-STREET
“La Coalición Power 4 Puerto Rico está indignada por la crisis de feminicidios en la Isla y el peligro en el que permanecen nuestras hermanas y familiares trans. Apoyamos los reclamos del pueblo puertorriqueño que exige #NiUnaMenos y acción que incluya la educación con perspectiva de género para ayudar a desmantelar el sexismo sistémico y la misoginia, la capacitación adecuada de las fuerzas policiacas y otras agencias gubernamentales, y la rendición de cuentas por las fallas del sistema judicial.
“Lo que también es indignante es que a pocos días antes de que los cuerpos de Keishla Rodríguez Ortiz y Andrea Ruiz Costas fueron hallados, la Junta de Control Fiscal determinó que solo $200,000 —en lugar de los $7 millones solicitados originalmente— serían suficientes para un estado de emergencia sobre la violencia de género, una acción que fue producto de años de presión pública. Las críticas fueron en crescendo y la Junta se apresuró a afirmar a principios de esta semana que había reservado millones para el Departamento de Justicia de Puerto Rico. Pero esta asignación no fue específicamente para el estado de emergencia.
“Si bien la Junta ayer por la tarde cedió bajo presión y ahora ha autorizado los $7 millones, les tomó dos asesinatos más para descubrir su error. La Junta no tuvo ningún problema en defraudar la seguridad de las mujeres puertorriqueñas mientras acordaba pagar a algunos fondos buitres casi 80 centavos por cada dólar de una deuda aún sin auditar. Las puertorriqueñas vulnerables a la violencia no deberían estar a la merced de una junta que antepone las ganancias de Wall Street a una crisis de vida o muerte.
“Además, si bien aplaudimos al gobernador Pierluisi por declarar este estado de emergencia atrasado y haber solicitado recursos significativos, le faltó el mismo nivel de audacia y urgencia que mostró cuando se enfrentó a la junta para insistir en financiar una elección cuestionable de cabilderos por la estadidad en el Congreso federal en torno a esta crisis.
“Los puertorriqueños se están enfrentando a sus líderes e instituciones y continúan presionando por un cambio. La falta de prioridades y una Junta que le sirve a Wall Street no van a impulsar eso. Es hora de detener este daño. Le hacemos un llamado al presidente Biden y al Congreso a revocar la Junta no electa que está arriesgando la vida de los puertorriqueños y el futuro de la isla”.
